Assistant Instructor Course

Looking to continue your education and be able to offer more to your Dive Center? Do you enjoy working with divers and want to be able to do more with students then just lead them on a tour?

As an Assistant Instructor you are able to qualify to independently conduct certain Specialty courses as well as teach parts of the core courses. This increases the opportunity to make additional income as well as increases your enjoyment level as a dive professional. Courses that Assistant Instructors can qualify to teach include but are not limited to:

  • Open Water class & pool sessions (with the exception of emergency ascent skills)

  • Altitude

  • Boat

  • Equipment Techniques

  • Full Face Mask

  • Perfect Buoyancy

  • Navigation

  • Scuba Rangers

  • Try Scuba

  • Waves, Tides, & Currents


  • Must have a RSTC Medical Release signed by a physician within 12 months directly preceding the course, and must be valid throughout (the physician must be a MD or DO. Nurse practitioners and PAs are not valid).

  • Must hold certifications for CPR, First Aid, and Oxygen provider valid within 24 months directly preceding the course, and must be valid throughout.

  • Must hold a Divemaster rating from an RSTC organization.

  • Must have proof of 60 logged dives totaling 40 hours or more of bottom time.

The Program consists of two sections:

  1. Academics

  2. Confined Water training


During the knowledge development portion of the Assistant Instructor course you will learn how to teach in the classroom and confined water. The course also covers learning styles and teaching strategies. You will develop the skills necessary to create engaging and exciting presentations for students.

Confined Water training:

During the confined water development portion of the Assistant Instructor course you learn how to set up confined water teaching presentations. You also learn how to evaluate student diver skills, how to spot potential problems, correct those problems that students may encounter, and utilize certified assistants. You will also be required to perform the Open Water diver skills at an instructor level.

* If you already are a SSI Professional, you already have the Pro Basic Package and have already paid for the Pro Registration Fee at Divemaster level. You do not have to purchase them again. If you are coming from a different RSTC agency, you will need those materials.

Please, also note that a SMB (surface marker buoy) and reel are required to all professional levels. The cost varies. See our retail staff to learn about your options.


  • Jun 27th (6pm to 10pm), 28th (9am to 6pm), 29th (8am to 5pm), 30th (9am to 6pm) & Jul 1st (6pm to 9pm).
